Clair Tappaan Lodge Winter Recreation Cross-Country Skiing The lodge maintains approximately 12 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails and offers excellent instruction in both cross country track and telemark techniques. Top quality cross-country skis and snowshoes are also available to rent at very reasonable rates. Skiing Classes We offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes in cross country skiing. Our philosophy and teaching methods emphasize having fun and learning functional skills for greater enjoyment. With basic skills in place, we move on to specific areas of the student’s interest, such as diagonal stride, turning and telemarking, or skating. We hold classes on weekends and holidays, as well as on weekdays when there is sufficient interest. Sign-up and payment for lessons and ski rentals takes place each morning starting at 9 AM in the Clair Tappaan Lodge living room. Classes typically start at 10 AM and cost $14 for our typical 1 to 2 hour lesson (depending upon class size). The minimum age for children is 8 years old. Rental Equipment We have a large supply of high quality cross country track and backcountry skis and snowshoes for adults and children. All equipment is rented on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved. Full Day Rates (Skis, Boots, Poles): Backcountry: First Day: $16, Each additional day: $14 Track: First Day: $13, Each additional day: $11, Kids 12 and under: $9 Half Day Rates: Backcountry: Adults: $11 Track: Adults: $9, Kids 12 and under: $6 Snowshoes: Adults: $11, Children: $7 Trails Cross country ski trails begin right outside of our back door. There are approximately 12 kilometers of groomed and tracked trails appropriate for beginning and intermediate skiers. The trails are a convenient link to miles of backcountry skiing. Use of the trails is free to guests of the Clair Tappaan Lodge. Others are asked to contribute $7 per person ($3.50 per child under 12 years of age) to help cover the costs of grooming and maintenance. Distances to downhill ski ares are as follows: one mile from Sugar Bowl one mile from Soda Springs one and a half miles from Donner Ski Ranch three miles from Boreal It is also within an easy drive to Squaw, Alpine, Northstar and others.
